The Ford Fiesta is a supermini that first came into production in 1976.
It is classed as a supermini, sort of like a compact car but of slightly smaller dimensions.
These superminis are known for packing a lot of features into one small package.
The Fiesta line is an important one to Ford, it is their third-largest in terms of sales after the Escort and F-150 pickup truck.
Originally the design of the car was overseen the Henry Ford's grandson - Henry Ford II.
Ford needed a model to keep up with the newly created supermini class of cars that was already occupied by the Mini, the Renault 5 and the Fiat 127.
Later on, many of the other big names in the motoring world would launch their own lines as sales exploded including the VW Polo and the Austin Metro.
Ford had great success with the Fiesta in the general market as well as the hot hatch one also, they experimented with many special versions of the car.
Most notable were the XR2, the RS Turbo and later on, the ST trims that allowed the normal car buyer to access sports car performance on a budget.
Modern versions of the Ford Fiesta are built on the global B-car platform that is shared with the European Fusion and the Mazda2.
