The Ford Focus was born when the American automaker needed a compact car line that would work well all over the world.

They had previously found little success in creating a compact car that could sell well both in Europe and North America.

Teams from both the UK  and the German wings of the company worked together in the run-up to the end of the 1990s.

By 1998 the first Focus was put into production and was available almost immediately as a hatchback, sedan and station wagon.

It had replaced the Escort in Europe, the Escort (a larger version of the model) in the USA and the Laser in Australia.

In 2005 the team went back to the drawing board and produced a second-generation version of the car with a more "grown-up" style.

It was now based on the C1 platform that was also used under the Mazda3, Ford Kuga and the Mazda CX-7.

The car was now longer and packed full of more features to help it sell to families - the largest target segment of the market for the line.

Over the years more design changes were put in place as the line continued to be optimized to help it sell.

It was even offered with various high-performance trims at various points of its life such as the RS and ST versions.
