The iconic 500 first hit the markets over 50 years ago, debuting in 1957. However, this model was retired in 1975. It then took a few decades for the reintroduction of the Italian city car. The modern iteration of the model was unveiled in 2007.
Only a single generation has been released in modern times. However, it did receive a facelift in 2016.
There have also been a number of variations of the model to the success of the 500. The most notable of these include the 500C, 500L, and 500X. There was also a sports version made by Abarth, which was unveiled in 2008.
The cabrio (C) first entered the market in 2009. The L was a mini MPV version of the model that entered the market in 2012. It was later discontinued in 2022. Finally, the crossover version called the 500X entered the market in 2014 and has been a regular fixture of the Fiat family ever since.
There have been a wide array of trim levels over the years. These have typically consisted of models like the Lounge, Pop, and Retro. However, there are certainly others.
Competition from the small city car usually comes from models like the Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto, and Renault Clio.
Powertrains have ranged from a 900 cc inline-2 through to a 1.4 inline-4 for the petrol offerings. Only a 1.3 L inline-4 was offered for diesel variants.
There was also an EV version called the 500e that was released in 2013. Interestingly, this model was discontinued in 2019, just before the surge of popularity in EVs. This was likely done with the planned release of the New 500, which is fully-electric. This EV version of the classic city car was unveiled in 2020.
