The Ford Edge went into production in 2007 when the American automaker wanted to launch a mid-size crossover SUV line.
To make it happen they took the chassis from the Fusion (that was also in use under the Mazda6) and stuck a tall SUV-like body on it.
It was also sold under its partner's brand as the Mazda CX-9 while that company developed its own crossover SUVs in-house.
Ford also sold an upmarket version of the Edge through their luxury wing as the Lincoln MKX - although with more premium features and finish.
Originally the Edge was only sold with a small range of gasoline engine options but as they introduced the second generation in 2015 they added diesel options.
For the second generation, they also improved the transmission, moving away from the old 6-speed it a much more efficient 8-speed one.
Ford also began marketing this car in Europe as the Kuga, a strategy that rarely works as the two markets are drastically different but this one worked.
In 2019 a facelift was applied to the line that refined both the exterior and interior of the Ford Edge.
Along with the design changes, new driver aids were added to the car including post-collision braking and evasive steering to help avoid potential accidents.
Ford also introduced the car into the Australian market at the same time thanks to its success in Europe, branding it as the Endura there.
