After the Mondeo was a financial flop in North America the company introduced the Ford Fusion as its replacement.
This was unexpected as across the pond in Europe the Mondeo did extremely well as the company's flagship mid-size car there.
This new Fusion was a model that was designed to appeal to both the American market and the North American market at the same time.
Ford had already had success in doing this with the Focus, a compact car they launched in the late-1990s to both Europe and the US.
This larger model was built on the CD3 platform that was originally designed by Mazda, they used it under their 6 and CX-9 nameplates.
Ford went on to use this chassis under many more models including the Edge crossover SUV and several luxury lines too.
Those luxury lines were sold under their Lincoln brand as the MKZ and the MKX.
This Fusion went on to enter a second generation of design which was then built on the CD4 platform, one that was designed in-house.
Ford also used it under their Lincoln Continental and the Galaxy minivan that was sold in Europe.
A wide range of gasoline engines and the choice of automatic or manual transmissions were offered with this new Fusion model.
It was also offered in one of seven trims including a hybrid one that allowed drivers to achieve a much better fuel economy.
