Originally the Outback name was used for a rugged trim available on the Subaru Legacy and for a short period the Subaru Impreza too.
It was a trim that was only available as a station wagon on those models with a larger displacement boxer engine and 6-speed transmission (compared to the 5-speed default).
Many additional features were also bolted onto these Outback trims including adjustable air suspension and protective body armor and increased ground clearance.
Thanks to the huge success of these rugged versions of the car Subaru launched the Outback as its own line in 2009.
It was still based on the Legacy but in most markets, the donor car's name was dropped to allow it to become its own brand.
The Japanese automaker pushed the aspects that made the previous Outbacks so special even further, such as increasing the ground clearance even further.
Engine choices were on the larger scale starting at 2.5-liter and of course, were boxer engines like most of the rest of the manufacturer's fleet.
For the US market, the Subaru Outback is fitted with a higher level of features and luxury to compete in the tough but lucrative market.
A surround sound stereo system complete with connectivity technologies for mobile devices leads the additional features in the American version of the car.
