The Chevrolet Malibu line first came in during the 1960s as a sub-model spawned from the Chevelle.

It was offered as a top-of-the-line version of the Chevelle and was so popular that the American automaker released it into its own nameplate in 1978.

When this was done it replaced the Chevelle and sported a much different design, moving away from the larger spaceship design that was popular in the 1950s.

This new model was smaller and lighter to help keep up with the automotive market that was feeling the pinch from the oil crisis of the mid-1970s.

In 1997 a second generation (of the Malibu being its own nameplate) entered production and was drastically different than before.

It shrank once again and boasted a much more aerodynamic body to help keep running costs down and was the first in its line to be a front-wheel-drive.

This move to powering the front wheels was done to further reduce the weight of the car, losing the drive shaft in the process and precious weight along with it.

Nowadays the Chevrolet Malibu shares its platform with the Buick Regal, Holden Commodore as well as the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia.

It continues to push the fuel economy even further as many car buyers look to cut costs down.
