The Mazda Tribute is a compact crossover SUV that first entered production in the year 2000.

Originally it was based on the Mazda 323 hatchback, which is sold outside North America as the Mazda Premacy.

The Tribute uses a modified Mazda GD platform and can be powered by four-cylinder gasoline engines or four-cylinder turbodiesel engines.

It was sold by Mazda and partners Ford and Toyota under a variety of names, including the Mazda Tribute, Ford Escape (Mazda Tribute in most of the world) and Toyota Rav4 (Mazda Tribute in Canada).

This new SUV-style vehicle that lacked offroad equipment (a crossover SUV) paved the way for what has become a wildly successful class of vehicles.

The Tribute features a MacPherson strut front suspension with a twist-beam rear suspension.

Controversy surrounded this vehicle's safety record, due to consumer crash testing results released in 2004 by the Insurance Institute for Highway.
