The Toyota Sienna was launched in the latter part of the 1990s as a replacement for the Previa.

Fuel economy was getting ever more important for buyers and the rear-wheel-drive Previa was just too heavy to compete.

Toyota took the already heavily-engineered Camry platform and stuck a minivan body on top resulting in a lighter end product.

Using the already established name the company described this new minivan as the "Camry of the minivan world" to help launch it.

Buyers could only choose to have the Sienna with one option of an engine, a 3-liter V6 mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Inside of the car was an impressive level of features including power sliding doors and important safety equipment such as side torso airbags.

In 2003 a heavily revised second generation entered the market and the Sienna was moved onto the newer generic K platform.

This K platform could be found under many other Toyotas including the Avalon and the Highlander.

The Japanese automaker really stepped it up a gear to compete with the fierce competition seen in North America.

They added Xenon headlights, dynamic cruise control, parking sensors and DVD players to make the new Sienna stand out.

A third and fourth generation would also come out over the following decade and see even more features added too.

New models of the minivan could detect potential collisions and actively avoid them, an important feature for such a family-orientated car.
