As Honda had already seen success with their CR-V (one of the first compact crossover SUV models to hit the market) they went bigger and better.
They launched the Acura MDX in the year 2000 for the 2001 model year and used the Honda Pilot as a donor.
That Pilot itself is based on the Accord meant that this MDX had a lot in common with that mid-size car and essentially made it the luxurious crossover SUV version of it.
When launched, the MDX was only offered with one choice of engine and transmission - a 3.5-liter V6 mated to a 5-speed automatic.
This tradition of one engine choice would continue until the third generation when Acura offered two instead.
Inside the car, you can find many smart space-saving technologies, a formula that worked very well for the Odyssey minivan.
It also bore some impressive features to help it command the larger price tag, such as DVD players and a backup camera in the early days.
In more recent times the company focuses on fuel economy and safety technologies such as radar-controlled autonomous systems.
The modern MDX is made lighter than its previous generations thanks to advances in materials, such as the harder steel used in its construction requiring less of it in the shell.
A 10-speed automatic transmission also helps the 2022 fourth-generation model accelerate and cruise more efficiently too.
