When the Kia Sportage first went into production during the early-1990s it was classed as a compact SUV.
It used the Mazda Bongo chassis as a base and was built using many of the Mazda components on offer at the time.
Not many of these models were created but were placed in the lower-price end of the market and offered buyers a no-frills choice when shopping for SUVs.
In 2004 the Kia Sportage was completely redesigned to now be a compact crossover SUV built on top of the Elantra of the time.
This meant that the car was fully Kia engineered and also boasted a low-weight design and low running costs.
These sorts of models had already done well on the market with examples such as the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4 appearing almost a decade before.
For those who did want some offroad capability, the Sportage could be purchased with a four-wheel-drive system fitted, although front-wheel-drive was standard on these models.
Over the years the line has been improved upon with the South Korean company learning what the majority wants and putting that into the car.
Currently, the fifth-generation model is on sale of the Sportage and is also sold as the Hyundai Tucson through the company's close partner.
